DesignCraft: An Open-Source InDesign Alternative Built in Rust

DesignCraft is ArtCraft's free, open-source InDesign alternative — a page layout and publishing app with spreads, threaded stories, professional typography and print-ready PDF output, built as a clean-room Rust application. It is in development (current GitHub release v0.5.0, October 10, 2026), free under Apache-2.0 with no subscription, no licence server, no telemetry — the official page states all three — and it also speaks to the Canva audience: anyone assembling multi-page layouts who just refuses to rent their tools.

What DesignCraft Actually Is

DesignCraft is the InDesign slot in the ArtCraft suite — professional desktop publishing, natively. At 2,430 stars (October 11, 2026) it is the earliest-stage of the seven official apps, and desktop publishing is the category where "professional" has the most non-negotiable requirements: real typographic control, color-managed print output, and documents that survive handoff to a print shop. The official feature list is aimed exactly at that bar.

What It Can Do Today

Per the official DesignCraft page:

  • Layout model: spreads, parent pages, frames, threaded stories, paragraph and character styles, swatches, text wrap
  • Typography: Knuth–Plass paragraph composer, dictionary hyphenation, optical margin alignment, baseline grids — consistent line breaks on screen and in PDF
  • Print-ready PDF: selectable text with embedded fonts, CMYK and spot colors, bleed, crop marks, and PDF/A archival output
  • Engineering: multithreaded SIMD rendering, copy-on-write documents with instant undo, cached composition
  • Interop: documented native format, PNG export, layout interchange import/export
  • Agent-native: every UI element controllable via a JSON control channel and MCP server

What's Still Missing — the Honest Part

The official label is in development, and it is the earliest-stage of the seven — that means the template ecosystem, IDML-style exchange with InDesign itself, and the long tail of prepress edge cases are all ahead of it, not behind it. The print-ready feature list above is the right list; whether it survives your print shop is the test that matters. Design workflows deserve a proof cycle: build a real document, send it to your printer, read their feedback.

DesignCraft vs InDesign — and the Canva Question

indesign alternative draws about 720 searches a month at near-zero measured competition, and one keyword over — canva alternative (about 590) — reveals the second audience. They are different users with one shared complaint: subscriptions and lock-in.

Versus InDesign: the professional checklist is what DesignCraft is built for — parent pages, threaded stories, real paragraph composition (Knuth–Plass, the same algorithm class InDesign uses), CMYK and spot color, bleed and crop marks, PDF/A. InDesign's advantage is fifteen-plus years of prepress trust and the industry's plugin/scripting ecosystem; DesignCraft's is the same output targets from a free, offline, agent-scriptable app. Verify with your print shop — that is the only prepress benchmark.

Versus Canva: Canva wins on templates and frictionless browser convenience; DesignCraft wins on typographic control, local files, and no login. If your work is social-media graphics, Canva is fine; if it is multi-page documents with real typography, this is the tool to watch. Suite-wide comparison: ArtCraft vs Adobe & Office. Presentation-side sibling: DeckCraft vs PowerPoint.
