EffectCraft: An Open-Source After Effects Alternative in Pure Rust
EffectCraft is ArtCraft's free, open-source After Effects alternative — a motion graphics and VFX compositor built entirely in Rust. It is in development (current GitHub release v0.7.0, October 10, 2026), free under Apache-2.0 with no account — and its differentiator is the one every media outlet missed: every ArtCraft app is agent-ready, drivable through a CLI, a JSON control channel or an MCP server, which for a compositor means render pipelines and batch graphics can be scripted end to end.
What EffectCraft Actually Is
EffectCraft is the After Effects slot in the ArtCraft suite: compositions, layers, keyframes, effects and 3D — the motion-graphics model — implemented as a native Rust application. The official page describes it as "young, moving fast, and already usable." At 4,331 stars (October 11, 2026) it is a mid-sized repo in the family, and motion graphics is a category where free tools are famously scarce, which is why this page's keyword — after effects alternative, about 1,000 searches a month — has almost no real competition.
What It Can Do Today
Per the official EffectCraft page:
- Compositing model: compositions, layers and keyframes (linear, bezier, hold, eased, roving) with a graph editor for value and speed curves
- 259 effects across blur, color correction, distortion, generators, keying, particles/simulation, stylize and time
- Layer types: solids, shapes, text, footage, nested comps, nulls, adjustment layers, cameras, lights — with parenting, track mattes and 38 blend modes
- Real 3D: 3D layers, cameras with depth of field, lights with soft ray-traced shadows, orbit/pan/dolly tools
- JavaScript expressions (wiggle, loops, layer references) edited inline
- Export: H.264, ProRes with alpha, PNG/TIFF, 32-bit EXR sequences, GIF — plus Lottie import/export
- Headless CLI for scripts and agents
What's Still Missing — the Honest Part
The official label is in development ("young, moving fast, and already usable" is the page's own framing). Motion graphics users lean hardest on three things a young app struggles with most: plugin ecosystems, third-party format quirks, and years of rendering edge cases. The 259 built-in effects and the expression engine cover a real workflow today; the long tail of AE-specific plugins and templates does not transfer. Test with your own compositions, and check the repository's changelog — the version counter (v0.7.0 already) is moving quickly.

EffectCraft vs After Effects
The comparison that matters here is not just feature-for-feature — it is what an open, scriptable compositor changes about the job. After Effects owns the category, but its automation story runs through paid tooling and its licensing runs through a subscription; EffectCraft's answer is structural: every UI element controllable through a CLI, JSON control channel or MCP server, plus JavaScript expressions with wiggle, loops and layer references built in.
Where EffectCraft already delivers: a genuine compositing model — keyframe graph editing, 259 effects, track mattes, parenting, real 3D layers with ray-traced soft shadows, ProRes-with-alpha and 32-bit EXR export, Lottie round-tripping for the web pipeline.
Where After Effects keeps its crown: the ecosystem — decades of plugins, templates, tutorials and studio-standard interop. EffectCraft is in development, and that is the honest frame for every freelance handoff today. But for automation-heavy pipelines — batch lower-thirds, generated variations, agent-driven rendering — the open architecture is the story, and it is one After Effects structurally cannot match. Suite-wide context: ArtCraft vs Adobe.
FAQ
Is EffectCraft a free After Effects alternative?
Yes — free and open source (Apache-2.0), a native Rust compositor with 259 effects, 3D layers and an expression engine. Officially in development.
Can EffectCraft be scripted or automated?
Yes — that is its signature: a headless CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server can drive the app, on top of inline JavaScript expressions.
What can EffectCraft export?
H.264, ProRes with alpha, PNG/TIFF, 32-bit EXR sequences and GIF, plus Lottie import/export, per the official page.
Can EffectCraft open After Effects projects?
No AE project import is documented by the official page. Compositions would be rebuilt; Lottie round-tripping covers some web-animation exchange.
Does EffectCraft need an account?
No — downloads come straight from GitHub releases.
