FilmCraft: A Free Premiere Pro Alternative That Runs on Your Desktop
FilmCraft is ArtCraft's free, open-source Premiere Pro alternative — a video editor written in pure Rust, "down to its own codecs," per the official page. It is in development (current GitHub release v0.5.0, October 10, 2026), free under Apache-2.0 with no account — and it is the only craft app without a hosted web version: video editing is the heaviest workload in the suite, and FilmCraft stays native on Windows, macOS and Linux.
What FilmCraft Actually Is
FilmCraft is the Premiere Pro slot in the ArtCraft suite: a timeline-based video editor with source and program monitors, built as a clean-room Rust application — including its own codec implementations, which the official page calls out explicitly ("written in pure Rust — down to its own codecs"). At 8,134 stars (October 11, 2026) it is one of the suite's biggest repositories, and video is where "free and open source" is rarest, which makes it one of the most watched apps in the family.
What It Can Do Today
Per the official FilmCraft page:
- Real NLE editing: source/program monitors, three-point editing, all trim modes, J/K/L dynamic trimming
- Frame-exact timing: integer timebase — no drift on 23.976 or drop-frame 29.97
- Native codecs (no FFmpeg): H.264, HEVC, ProRes, VP9, AAC, Opus with bit-exact decoders
- Color grading: curves, color wheels, HSL secondaries, LUTs, HDR/log workflows, scopes
- Effects & motion: ~55 video effects, 30 transitions, keyframes with value/velocity graphs, linear-light GPU compositor
- Broadcast audio: EBU R128 loudness meters, mixer with automation, native DSP
- Export presets and a headless CLI for scripts and agents
What's Still Missing — the Honest Part
The official label is in development, and video editors are the hardest apps in any suite to mature: format matrices, hardware acceleration, and timeline stability all take years of real footage through the mill. The official apps page also lists FilmCraft as the one app without a hosted web version — a self-hostable WebAssembly build exists for tinkerers, but there is no "open it in a browser" link like the other apps have. For paid production today, the honest guidance is the same as the rest of the suite: evaluate with your own footage, keep a fallback, watch the release notes.

Official source: the FilmCraft releases page on GitHub — free, no account. Per the official app page: macOS universal DMG (Apple silicon + Intel); Windows MSI and portable builds for x64, x86 and ARM64; Linux AppImage, Flatpak, deb, RPM and tarball for x86_64 and ARM64; a FreeBSD tarball; a CLI tool; SHA-256 checksums; and an optional self-hostable web build. Build-from-source needs Rust 1.95+.
FilmCraft vs Premiere Pro
premiere pro alternative draws about 390 searches a month with almost no real competition from free software — the honest field of open-source video editors is thin, and the big head term (open source video editor, ~2,400 searches) is dominated by tools with very different scopes. FilmCraft's angle is specific: a Premiere-shaped editor, with the Premiere-shaped feature set above, that costs nothing and runs natively on all three desktop platforms.
Where it already speaks Premiere's language: the edit model (three-point editing, trim modes, dynamic trimming), professional timing (integer timebase, drop-frame correctness), ProRes and H.264/HEVC handling with bit-exact decoders, LUT-based grading with scopes, and EBU R128 audio meters — these are the checkpoints a working editor actually tests first, and they are on the official feature list today.
Where Premiere keeps the crown: depth and ecosystem — years of hardware-accelerated maturity, plugin universes, and integrations. FilmCraft is in development; the release cadence is fast, but "in development" means what it says. Evaluate with your own footage; the free price makes that trial free too.
