LightCraft: An Open-Source Lightroom Alternative That Keeps Your Files Local

LightCraft is ArtCraft's free, open-source Lightroom alternative — a photo library and non-destructive raw developer written in pure Rust. It is in development (current GitHub release v0.5.0, October 10, 2026), fully free under Apache-2.0 with no account, no cloud, no telemetry and no subscription — the official page states that outright. Native raw decoders cover DNG, CR2, ARW, NEF, RAF (including X-Trans), RW2, PEF and ORF, and the whole pipeline is built to keep your catalog and your edits on your own machine.

What LightCraft Actually Is

LightCraft is the Lightroom-shaped app in the ArtCraft suite: a photo library and raw developer in one, built as a clean-room Rust application — no Electron, no cloud dependency. With 8,615 stars (October 11, 2026) it is one of the largest repositories in the organization, and its pitch aims straight at the sorest spot in photography software: Adobe's subscription-and-cloud model. Here, the official page's promise is local-first everything — your originals, your catalog, your edits stay on your machine.

What It Can Do Today

Per the official LightCraft page:

  • Non-destructive editing on a scene-referred, wide-gamut, 32-bit float pipeline — originals are never touched
  • Editing tools: light, color, effects, tone curve, an 8-band color mixer, 3-way grading wheels, 18 presets
  • Masking: brush, linear and radial gradients, luminance and color ranges, plus sky/subject/background masks
  • Native Rust raw decoders for DNG, CR2, ARW, NEF, RAF (including X-Trans), RW2, PEF and ORF
  • Library management: albums, ratings, flags, search, and virtualized grids built for large catalogs
  • GPU speed: roughly 4 ms per slider move on a 24-megapixel raw file

What's Still Missing — the Honest Part

The official label is in development, and for a catalog tool that carries specific weight: a photo library is a long-term commitment, and Lightroom users hold years of catalogs, keywords and collections inside Adobe's ecosystem. LightCraft today gives you the developer and the local-first library, but migration tooling from an existing Lightroom catalog is not something the official page documents. Treat it as "adopt for new work, watch closely for the catalog question" — and check the repository's issues for the current state before committing a serious library to it.

A WebAssembly build can be self-hosted. Build-from-source needs Rust 1.90+.

LightCraft vs Lightroom

This is the biggest single "alternative" keyword in the entire ArtCraft orbit — lightroom alternative draws roughly 2,900 searches a month — because Lightroom's subscription model is the thing photographers most want an escape from. So how does the free contender actually compare?

Where LightCraft matches the pitch: the core loop is the same — import, cull with ratings and flags, develop non-destructively with tone curves and color grading, mask locally, export. The raw decoding is native Rust covering the major camera formats, and the local-first design means no cloud plan is ever part of the conversation.

Where Lightroom still wins: maturity and ecosystem. Lightroom's mobile sync, tethering depth, AI denoise and the surrounding tutorial universe are the product of fifteen years; LightCraft is in development with a fast-moving changelog, and catalog migration from Adobe is an open question. The practical play: run them side by side on a small folder of your own raws — LightCraft is free, so the trial costs nothing but an evening. FAQ

Is LightCraft a free Lightroom alternative?

Yes — free and open source (Apache-2.0), a local-first photo library and raw developer. It is officially in development, so evaluate it against your own raw files.

Does LightCraft support my camera's raw format?

Native Rust decoders cover DNG, CR2, ARW, NEF, RAF (including X-Trans), RW2, PEF and ORF, per the official page.

Does LightCraft send my photos to the cloud?

No — the official page states "no account, no cloud, no telemetry, no subscription." Editing happens locally.

Can LightCraft replace my Lightroom catalog?

Not yet as a migration path: catalog transfer from Adobe is not documented by the project. It is strongest for new or parallel libraries today.

Which platforms does LightCraft run on?

Windows, macOS and Linux natively, plus a self-hostable WebAssembly build and a headless CLI.
